The knitted mesh shade does two things at once. It diffuses the light passing straight through it, and it casts the knit pattern onto the surrounding walls and ceiling, so the fixture contributes texture to a room rather than just brightness.
The shade is flame retardant polyester over a steel frame. The polyester holds its knit structure without sagging near a warm bulb, and the steel frame keeps the globe from deforming when it is handled during cleaning or installation.
The 60W maximum rating gives real range. Run a lower output bulb for ambient dining light, or go to the top of the range when the fixture is the main light source in the room. A fabric covered cord finishes the drop rather than leaving exposed wiring.
